Subject: Treeology EP (Static Caravan)

Coinciding with their debut release, the sublime six-track Treeology EP, the five multi-instrumentalists return home after a short national jaunt and some well-placed national radio appearances.

Lawrence Becko (piano, guitar, vocals), Jasmin Hollingum (violin, French horn, keyboards) and Alex Housden (cello) had been beavering away quietly since 2004 until their demo received a favourable review on Teletext, prompting local label Static Caravan to step in and release their hand-packaged limited edition CD.

Opening with The Originof Trees before leading into the title track and These Quiet Times (about birds), the subject of nature seems, strong, a theme - perhaps surprisingly inspired by Birmingham.

'I'm fed up of people's impression of the city,' says Lawrence of the popular misconception of Birmingham as concrete jungle. 'It's incredibly green and there are parks everywhere. Birmingham as being 'gritty' and 'urban' is not my experience of living here, so I'm just trying to convey that message.'

With a new edition of their free cultural fanzine fuzzy bird also out now, and plans to release a new 7" single, shayd bard are making inroads without the hype surrounding some of their peers.

'It's building gradually,' comments Lawrence confidentally.
